2050 is an arbitrary target

Imagine someone arguing that a Marathon isn’t a long run because it’s an arbitrary distance. Would you take them seriously?

Twenty-six miles is a long way to run and 2050 is a long wait for net zero. The date was chosen because it’s about the maximum delay the science can tolerate. If anything, we need to be arguing for an earlier date.
