It’s been well said, by many people, that you’re entitled to your own opinion but not to your own facts. That’s why net-zero is very different to Brexit. Different opinions on Brexit are legitimate as there is no right answer; it entirely depends upon your particular priorities and values whether you think it was a good idea or a bad idea. Net zero is not like that.
Questions such as “is the Earth flat?” or “is net zero necessary?” are answered by direct observation of the real world. Unlike Brexit, the answers do not depend upon your values or priorities.
That’s why it’s risky to nail your political colours to being against net-zero. It’ll destroy your credibility as it becomes more and more obvious that net zero is not optional.

It reminds me of the Roman Catholic church continuing to ban Copernicus’s book — that argued the Sun lay at the centre of the Solar System — for centuries after everyone else accepted Copernicus was correct. It made them look both stubborn and ignorant.
